Mad Men

Bryan and I started watching the series Mad Men this week on Netflix.  We love it!  It’s a TV show about the advertising world on Madison Avenue in the 1960s.  The costumes and sets are wonderful, the dialogue is sharp and fast, and I care about the characters…even as they (already in the third episode of the first season) are on fast-tracks to destroy themselves.

Other favorite shows of ours include Six Feet Under, the first few seasons of Alias, The 4400, Dead Like Me, Battlestar Galactica, Deadwood, Firefly, Lost, Rescue Me, and Sex in the City.

At some point, we may watch The Wire, Rome, and that one about the capitol…West Wing.  Any recommendations from you?

  1. Veronica Mars. I also loved the first seasons of Alias, Do is obsessed with BSG, and we both love Lost… but Veronica Mars is the show we most love watching together, over and over. And quoting. And getting our friends addicted to. I've been out of work with the flu all week, and yesterday I wrote a message to my former boss and his wife saying "The only good part about having the flu is getting to re-watch all my Veronica Mars DVDs all afternoon." Yep. That's my favorite. We watched all of West Wing last fall during the run up to the election. It was good… and a bit scary how much it reflected alot of things that happened.

  3. The West Wing is so good! I watched an episode or two with Maretta and Kyle, and the I decided to start with season one and watch them in order. I’m on season 7 now, and it’s still really good. In fact, I just ended a DVD and I hate that I have to wait until tomorrow to find out what happens next! I’ve also really enjoyed Heroes, which I’ve been watching online on Netflix.

  4. LOVED West Wing! We started last November in the post-election enthusiasm. Finished in June and have been aimless ever since. Have heard good things about Mad Men and are thinking about starting it. Also…I know I’m a big nerd…kind of excited to try the John Adams miniseries this fall.

  5. My friends and I have been slowly working through West Wing since sophomore year. We’re about half way through season 5 at this point. Well probably go through a serious mourning phase when it’s all over…

  6. I was an enormous West Wing fan…until the 5th season. At that point – and NOT just because Rob Lowe left the show!! – it got just too far-fetched and absurd.

Sports Night. Sports Night. Sports Night. I LOVE this show, sadly cut down too soon (see my post about how I am the kiss of death for good television: http://kjbpod.wordpress.com/2008/11/21/nooooooo/)

  8. Sounds like we should move West Wing up on our list! Lots of endorsements!
And yes, Karen, I’ll check out Sports Night. After hearing you proclaim it’s wonderfulness for years, I should have watched it by now.
And Jennifer, I don’t think I’ve heard much about Veronica Mars. We’ll have to add that to our Netflix queue as well.
