Andrew and I have been enjoying reading some lovely chapter books together recently. We just finished James and the Giant Peach, which was great fun. What a silly story! This morning, we started reading The Trumpet of the Swan, and we’re both really enjoying it.
I looked for Stewart Little at the library, but it was out. I think we’ll read Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and maybe Danny, Champion of the World soon. We read Farmer Boy last winter, and that was quite a hit.
Do you have any suggestions for good books to read aloud to a four-year-old?

What fun times those must be!! Give him an extra squeeze from his granny, please.

Because of Winn Dixie – The original Wizard of Oz – You should check out the James and the Giant Peach movie. It is almost as good as the book.

What about the "My Father's Dragon" books? Or Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle since he loves animals?

Hey Lezlie, I'd been thinking about the Wizard of Oz. Terry read the first seven books in the series to me when I was little. Good suggestion! And I didn't know there was a James and the Giant Peach movie. Good to know that it's well-done!Grace – My Father's Dragon is a good suggestion. I barely remember those. And I actually have a Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle book here (I think the farm one), and Andrew will absolutely love those. Thanks for the suggestions!

p.s. there's a book by jim trelease called "the read-aloud handbook" – if your library has a parenting section, it would be in there. it goes through different books by age levels, etc., and i think it's a pretty good resource.

Thanks for the suggestion, Grace. I reserved it at the library. Along with about 30 other books and suggestions! It sounds like a good one.

I don’t know if Andrew would enjoy them as much as I did, but I absolutely adored the Ramona books! The youngest one is (I think) when she starts kindergarten, so I bet Andrew could relate to some of that. Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is a great one, and Farmer Boy has always been one of my favorites!
Danny the Champion is one of my all-time favorite books, ever. What about the Narnia series? We started reading those when the kids were about Andrew’s age.
Good choice with James and the Giant Peach! This book is really silly and has animal-related twists: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0618111298?ie=UTF8&tag=dooce-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=0618111298. I think he’d enjoy it. (Sorry for the ugly link…)
Speaking of Beverly Cleary, he might also enjoy The Mouse and the Motorcycle.
pippi longstockings!
One of my favorite books is Stellaluna about a baby bat that is lost and adopted by another bird and her three babies. A couple of the pictures are so funny! Becky and I loved to read it together.

What great suggestions! Thanks everyone:)
Karen – Narnia is one of our favorite books too. And come to think of it, I bet Andrew would be about ready. That’ll keep us busy for some time!
Becky – It’s funny that you recommended Polkabats and Octopus Slacks by Calef Brown. We’ve read a couple of his poems, and I unsuccessfully tried to check out that book at the library last winter. Then, the day before you suggested it, that book was highlighted in a blog I read (http://www.dooce.com/daily-style/2009/08/31/polkabats-and-octopus-slacks). Quelle coincidence!
Lisa – The Mouse and the Motorcycle. I have some vague memory of that book – sounds like it’s right up Andrew’s alley. I’ll put it on our list!
Jessica – Pippi Longstockings! I bought that book for Andrew from Sweden (the author is Swedish). But it got put away before we read it. I’ll pull it out for a read this week!
Linda – Stellaluna is such a beautiful book. I love the illustrations. We read it when Andrew was little, but it’s been quite a while. I’ll check it out again.
Thanks everyone! We finished The Trumpet of the Swan last night. Andrew loved it. And I loved reading it to him. He’s plowing his way through the Gerald and Piggy books by our beloved Mo Willems. I’m a little awed at how much he can read! The world of books is so much fun!
You know, I remember the Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle books being really neat, and since Andrew is such an imaginative guy, he might really like them. I don’t remember who wrote them, though.
